Mahua Moitra, a prominent Trinamool Congress leader, has taken her controversial expulsion from the Lok Sabha to the Supreme Court. The expulsion, stemming from a ‘cash for query’ corruption case, accused Moitra of accepting bribes, including ₹2 crore in cash and luxury gifts, in exchange for posing critical questions in Parliament.

While denying bribery allegations, Moitra admitted to sharing login details, asserting it as common among MPs. The Ethics Committee’s report deemed the allegations established, labeling her conduct as immoral and indecent.

The Lok Sabha’s acceptance of the report led to a heated debate, resulting in Moitra’s expulsion. Outside Parliament, she accused the ethics panel of breaking rules and predicted future CBI raids.

Mahua Moitra’s conduct was immoral: Om Birla

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla after debate said, “This House accepts the conclusions of the Committee – that MP Mahua Moitra’s conduct was immoral and indecent. So, it is not appropriate for her to continue as an MP…”

“… The Lok Sabha has presided over the most tenacious witch-hunt of one of the 78 MPs, a first-timer, a single woman, with no political lineage… This Lok Sabha has also seen the weaponisation of a parliamentary committee,” she said.

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the expulsion as unacceptable, attributing it to BJP’s vendetta politics, while Moitra’s earlier claim suggested BJP’s premeditation in her expulsion.
