Asish Banerjee: Former West Bengal Assembly deputy speaker and five-time TMC MLA Asish Banerjee was found dead on Sunday morning at a Trinamool Congress office in Rampurhat, Birbhum district, located next to his residence. Police said his body was found hanging inside the office, and a purported suicide note was recovered at the scene.

According to officials, the note reportedly stated that no one was responsible for his death. PTI has not been able to independently verify the letter’s authenticity. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and police say the exact circumstances surrounding his death are yet to be established. Investigators are examining the contents of the note alongside other evidence at the scene.
Who Was Asish Banerjee
Banerjee represented Rampurhat in the West Bengal Assembly continuously from 2001 to 2026 and served as Deputy Speaker as well as a minister holding portfolios including school education and agriculture under the Mamata Banerjee government. He was a prominent TMC figure in Birbhum during the tenure of party strongman Anubrata Mondal as district president.
Recent Political Setbacks
Asish Banerjee; Banerjee lost his Rampurhat seat to BJP’s Dhruba Saha in this year’s Assembly election, as TMC’s 15-year rule in Bengal ended. He had since stepped back from active politics and resigned as chairman of the party’s Birbhum district core committee in June, weeks after the party’s defeat.
The post-mortem report and forensic examination of the note are expected to provide more clarity on the circumstances of his death. Police have not ruled any angle in or out at this stage.
