The Ministry of Railways has announced a major infrastructure project to construct a twin tube road rail tunnel between Gahpur and Numaligarh in Assam, aimed at transforming connectivity across the region. The project, estimated at ₹18,662 crore, will span approximately 34 kilometres and pass beneath the Brahmaputra River.

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Twin Tube Road Rail tunnel will integrate both highway and railway infrastructure within twin underground tubes, significantly reducing travel distance between the two points from nearly 250 km to just 34 km. Officials said the project has been approved as part of the government’s broader push to modernise transport networks and improve regional accessibility.

According to authorities, the tunnel is expected to enhance strategic, economic, and logistical connectivity in the Northeast by providing a faster and more reliable route across the Brahmaputra, which currently requires long detours due to limited crossing points. The integrated design will allow simultaneous movement of trains and vehicles, improving efficiency for passengers as well as freight transport.

Officials noted that the project is also likely to stimulate local development by improving access to markets, healthcare, education, and tourism destinations. Enhanced connectivity is expected to benefit industries in and around Numaligarh, including the refinery sector, while also strengthening links between northern and southern parts of Assam.

Government sources said the initiative forms part of a broader infrastructure expansion vision focused on reducing travel time, boosting trade, and strengthening connectivity in remote and strategically important regions. Further technical planning and implementation timelines are expected to be announced after detailed project assessments and clearances are completed.
