Uddhav Thackeray challenges EC’s decision on Shiv Sena symbol in high-octane showdown

Uddhav Thackeray: Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission after it awarded the Shiv Sena party name and bow-and-arrow symbol to his rival Eknath Shinde. Addressing a crowd outside his family home, Thackeray accused the Election Commission of being “PM Modi’s slave”. He urged his supporters to remain patient and prepare for the next election, which will be for the Mumbai civic body BMC. The Election Commission’s decision to award the party’s identity to Shinde has been seen as a coup against Thackeray and his team, who have vowed to challenge the decision in the Supreme Court.

Uddhav Thackeray’s attack on the Election Commission

Standing out of the sunroof of his car, Thackeray evoked the image of his father Bal Thackeray, who used to address supporters from the roof of his car during the party’s early days. Thackeray declared that the party’s symbol had been “stolen” and that the “thief” needed to be taught a lesson, in a reference to Shinde. The Election Commission’s decision to hand the identity of the party his father founded to his rival is a major setback for Thackeray.

Thackeray’s remarks against Eknath Shinde

Shinde had launched a rebellion last June, flying away with over 40 Sena MLAs with the help of the BJP. This eventually led to the ousting of Thackeray’s government that included two ideologically disparate allies in the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party. The Election Commission found that Shinde was supported by MLAs with 76% of the party’s winning votes in the 2019 Maharashtra assembly polls. It allowed the Thackeray faction to keep the name ‘Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray’ and the ‘flaming torch’ symbol assigned last year. Shinde hailed the move as a “victory for democracy” and called on Thackeray to “introspect” rather than calling him a “traitor”.
