Umar Khalid, an activist who is a suspect in the Delhi riots plot case, has been given temporary bail so that he can go to his sister’s wedding. The relief comes after several past denials, but it is restricted. The court made it clear that the grant of bail should not be seen as an opinion on the facts of the case. Khalid must follow several strict rules set by the court while out on bail.
The court allows bail for a family event, but the family will be watched
The Delhi High Court gave Khalid temporary bail so that he could go to pre-wedding events and the wedding itself.
The order was based on the humanitarian grounds of family responsibilities, but the court made it clear that this should not be seen as a weakening of the charges or the trial that was already happening.
Since September 2020, Khalid has been in jail under the UAPA because of the supposed bigger plot behind the Delhi riots in 2020.
