In Haldwani Jail, 44 prisoners have been found infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). ART center in-charge of Sushila Tiwari Hospital, Dr. Paramjit Singh said that including 44 prisoners, a female prisoner has also been found HIV positive.
According to the doctor, due to the continuous increase in the number of HIV-infected prisoners, there has been a stir in the jail administration.
Describing the treatment of prisoners, he said that an ART (antiretroviral therapy) center has been set up for HIV patients, where the infected are treated. My team is continuously checking the prisoners in the jail.
Dr Singh said, "Any inmate who is infected with HIV is given free treatment and medicines based on the guidelines of the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO)."
Dr. Singh further said that at present there are 1629 male and 70 female prisoners in the jail. After such a large number of prisoners being found HIV positive, the jail administration is also conducting regular check-up of the prisoners, so that timely treatment of HIV infected prisoners can be done.
