The Uttarakhand government has decided to demolish houses that have deep cracks as part of a second major demolition exercise. The buildings of Joshimath's Jaypee Residential colony are reportedly slated for destruction.
The district administration in Joshimath started to tear up the Mount View and Malari Inn hotels a few days ago. The colony has around 30 homes, and according to Times of India, many of them have developed large cracks.
Earlier, on January 11, CM Pushkar Singh Dhami paid a visit to Joshimath and spoke with locals and suffering families. The CM had said that only unavoidable situations required that the houses be completely destroyed; otherwise, there was no need to do so.
The local geophysical survey has begun in the meantime. Residents are being asked to move as part of the survey based on the scientific analyses of expert teams on the ground.
House cracks have begun to form in Sharana Chai village as a result of soil subsidence in the Joshimath region of Uttarakhand's Chamoli district.
CM Sukhu convenes meeting
Following the Joshimath tragedy, CM Sukhu convenes a meeting to discuss how to prevent such events in the state. Regarding the potential for such catastrophes in Himachal Pradesh, Sukhu called a meeting in the secretariat with the disaster management officers and DCs of all the districts.
There is no chance of a Joshimath-like tragedy occurring in Himachal Pradesh, according to Sukhu, but officials have nevertheless been ordered to take measures.
