Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inaugurated the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Standard Club Carnival in Dehradun. During the event, he inspected various stalls and administered an oath to encourage purchasing ISI-marked products.
Speaking at the event, CM Dhami highlighted the crucial role of standardization in ensuring quality, reliability, and sustainability of products. He lauded the BIS for its 78 years of service in setting industry standards, safeguarding consumer interests, and promoting quality across various sectors. He emphasized that a nation’s economic and industrial growth depends on the trustworthiness and durability of its products.
BIS Ensuring Consumer Trust and Industrial Growth
CM Dhami stressed that BIS has significantly contributed to India's economic and industrial development by implementing standards that ensure product quality and safety. “Whenever we buy a product, the first thing we check is whether it has the ISI mark. If it does, we trust its quality and safety,” he said, adding that this reflects BIS’s credibility and commitment to consumer protection.
He noted that standardization is not just about technical guidelines but serves as the foundation for the nation’s self-reliance and progress. In recent years, BIS has expanded its scope beyond industrial products to cover agriculture, road transport, health, and other critical sectors.
Strengthening Standards in Uttarakhand
CM Dhami revealed that BIS is working closely with key state departments, including PWD, MDDA, UPCL, and the Disaster Management Department, to promote standardization and awareness. He also emphasized the state's efforts to establish high standards for traditional products like handicrafts, organic farming products, and medicinal herbs to enhance their competitiveness in the global market.
‘House of Himalayas’ Initiative for Local Products
To promote local products on a global scale, the Uttarakhand government has launched the ‘House of Himalayas’ initiative. This umbrella brand aims to showcase and market high-quality products from the region, ensuring their global recognition and acceptance.
CM Dhami also praised BIS for setting up over 10,000 Standard Clubs in schools nationwide and signing MOUs with 100 premier educational institutions, including four in Uttarakhand. He reiterated PM Narendra Modi’s vision that Indian standards should not only match but surpass international benchmarks.
Commitment to High Standards
The Uttarakhand government, in collaboration with BIS, is committed to upholding the highest standards across industries to boost economic growth and global competitiveness. The event was attended by Cantt MLA Savita Kapoor, BIS Uttarakhand Director Saurabh Tiwari, Food Commissioner Harichandra Semwal, and BIS Deputy Director Snehlata.
