About ‘World Herbal Encyclopaedia’

As many as 51 volumes of the World Herbal Encyclopedia brought out by Acharya Balkrishna of Patanjali Research Foundation (and his team of researchers) were put on public display on Monday, Aug 1, in the presence of a galaxy of agricultural experts at Haridwar.

Such a public display of voluminous work — with all 51 volumes on display — on a big rack. What makes this series of publications, each volume containing about 800 to 1,000 pages, unique is that it puts together ancient and modern conceptual knowledge of medicinal plants.

It incorporates more than 50,000 herbal plants (from 7,500 plant genus) of 6 phylogenic groups like angiosperms, gymnosperms, pteridophytes etc, containing Vedic nomenclature for the first time. Literature in more than 2,000 languages has been scanned and covered.

It contains 30,500 canvas paintings and 35,100 line drawings. When all the volumes — expected to be a total of 109, produced in an alphabetic manner — are released by January 2023, it will be the world’s largest medicinal plant database.
