Dehradun News: In the heart of Dehradun, at the Parade Ground, the attention of passersby has been captured by a colossal 131-ft effigy of Ravana for the past week. The organizers of the festivities at the ground, the Bannu Biradari Dussehra Committee, proudly proclaim that this towering effigy of the demon king is the tallest in North India this year.

Craftsman Tejinder Singh Chauhan: A Record-Holder

The artistic mastermind behind this remarkable creation is Tejinder Singh Chauhan, hailing from Barara near Ambala in Haryana. Notably, Chauhan previously earned a place in the Limca Book of Records for crafting the tallest Ravana effigy in the country, standing at a staggering 221 ft in height. This monumental effigy was set ablaze during Dussehra in Chandigarh in 2019.

Creation Process and Materials

Tejinder Singh Chauhan and his team dedicated over three months to construct this massive effigy, involving the labor of 25 skilled craftsmen and incurring a total cost of Rs 8 lakh. The raw materials for the effigy were primarily sourced from Ambala, with Dehradun only providing the spare parts used for assembly. Additionally, two other effigies, representing Kumbhakarna (Ravana's brother) and Meghnad (the demon king's son), along with a model of Lanka and two Rakshasa effigies, were crafted by an artisan from Mahendragarh in Haryana, incurring a cost of Rs 2 lakh.

Promoting 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' Initiative

Apart from the awe-inspiring effigies, the organizers are also using the festivities to promote the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' (Save the Girl Child, Educate the Girl Child) initiative. They have created calendars based on this theme and incorporated it into all memorabilia and souvenirs associated with the festival. Moreover, the organizers have arranged donation drives for girls' hostels as a part of their commitment to this noble cause.
