With the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway nearing completion, the capital city of Uttarakhand is preparing for a significant surge in vehicular traffic. In response, the government is pushing forward with an ambitious plan to construct a 12-kilometre four-lane elevated road—a ring road corridor—from Asharodi near the Expressway to the Mohkampur railway overbridge.
The proposed corridor will pass through the center of the National Highway, aiming to streamline urban mobility and prevent traffic gridlock as intercity movement between Delhi and Dehradun becomes significantly faster. Once the expressway is operational, travel time between the two cities is expected to shrink to just 2.5 hours, likely prompting many commuters to opt for road travel over flights.
₹1000 Crore Project Under National Highway Authority of India
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has taken over the project and is currently conducting surveys, preparing the design and Detailed Project Report (DPR). The cost of the elevated corridor is estimated to be around ₹1000 crore.
According to officials, the DPR will be completed within three months, following which the project proposal will be submitted to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in New Delhi for approval. If the Centre grants approval promptly, construction is expected to begin soon after.
Route and Benefits of the Elevated Road
The elevated corridor will stretch from Mohkampur flyover to the forests near the Datkali Temple in Asharodi, effectively connecting the expressway to Dehradun city without interfering with surface-level traffic. Once operational, the corridor will ease pressure on existing roads, particularly:
Haridwar Bypass Road
ISBT area
Motarwala
Rispana Bridge
Jogiwala Circle
These areas currently suffer from frequent traffic jams, especially during festive seasons and pilgrimage rushes when tourist inflow to Mussoorie and other hill stations spikes.
A Strategic Move for Future Urban Planning
With the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway poised to transform regional connectivity, city planners are anticipating a manifold increase in traffic volume. The ring road project is part of a larger urban mobility strategy to keep Dehradun’s infrastructure resilient and future-ready
By handing over the project from PWD NH to NHAI, the government has signaled its intent to fast-track execution and ensure world-class construction standards.
The elevated road will not only cut travel time within the city but also enhance safety, reduce pollution, and unclog critical intersections—making it a vital link in Dehradun’s evolving urban transport framework.
