Delhi-Dehradun Expressway’s Parking Upgrade Spells End of Delays for Asia’s Longest Elevated Corridor, Will Dehradun Feel Closer Than Ever?

Delhi-Dehradun Expressway: New parking systems have been introduced along with Delhi-Dehradun Expressway to significantly enhance the overall travel experience for commuters.

Delhi-Dehradun Expressway: The much-awaited launch of the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway would soon be a reality. The game-changer for North India, the expressway promises to revolutionize the way people travel between the states of Uttarakhand and Delhi. Expected to be operational by February 2026, the 6-lane and 210-kilometre greenfield highway has been built at a cost of about Rs. 13,000 crore under the Bharatmala Project.

Delhi-Dehradun Expressway: Parking Facilities

New parking systems have been introduced along with Delhi-Dehradun Expressway to significantly enhance the overall travel experience for commuters. Trucks and buses can now leverage dedicated parking in dedicated lots with monthly passes. Private two-wheelers and cars would have choices for monthly day passes, day-night passes and night passes. This is likely to reduce traffic congestion, especially in areas like Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar Market area.

The enhanced parking facilities are aimed at reducing traffic jams and congestion that are often caused by buses and trucks parked on the roadside.

The National Highway Logistics Management Limited, a subsidiary of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), has invited applications for the development of parking capacity for about 1,000 vehicles at strategic locations.

Benefits At A Glance

The expressway will enhance connectivity to tourist destinations such as Haridwar, Rishikesh and Mussorie, boosting economic development in the region. The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway would include 5 railway overbridges, 100 underpasses and a rainwater harvesting system. It would link with significant routes including the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and the Delhi-Mumbai expressway, benefiting districts in both Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.

A 12-kilometre-long elevated corridor has been seamlessly constructed via the Rajaji National Park, featuring more than 6 underpasses and tunnels so wildlife can enjoy easy and safe passage. The expressway will connect Delhi to Dehradun in less than 2.5 hours, which is half than the present time of 5-6 hours.
