In a significant development for Uttarakhand’s pilgrimage infrastructure, the Union Cabinet has approved the Kedarnath Ropeway Project and Hemkund Ropeway Project under the National Ropeway Development Programme - Parvatmala Yojana. The 12.9 km-long Kedarnath ropeway will connect Sonprayag to Kedarnath, significantly reducing travel time from 8-9 hours to just 36 minutes.
Transforming Pilgrimage Travel
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the project will offer a major relief to pilgrims, especially senior citizens, children, and differently-abled devotees who find the current trek challenging. The ropeway cabins will have a seating capacity of 36 passengers, ensuring a comfortable and efficient journey.
Project Implementation
The project will be executed by the National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), a division of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently being prepared, and once completed, construction is expected to begin at the earliest.
A Safer and More Accessible Pilgrimage
Experts highlight that the two main options for reaching Kedarnath are the traditional trekking route and the ropeway/cable car system. While trekking is a difficult option for many, the ropeway will make the journey more accessible, safe, and time-efficient for all.
The approval of these projects marks a historic step in modernizing pilgrimage travel in Uttarakhand, ensuring a more convenient and safer experience for millions of devotees.
