Kolkata Doctor Case: – In a strong show of solidarity, doctors across the state have embarked on a 24-hour work boycott from Saturday morning in protest against the heinous rape and murder of a resident female doctor in Kolkata. The boycott has led to the suspension of Outpatient Department (OPD) services in hospitals, though emergency services, postmortem duties, and VIP responsibilities remain unaffected.
Dr. Manoj Verma, President of the Provincial Medical Health Service Association, stated that doctors unanimously decided to initiate the boycott from 6 AM on Saturday to 6 AM on Sunday. He emphasized that all doctors in hospitals will abstain from OPD and surgical duties during this period, while emergency services will continue as usual.
Demands for Safety and Intervention
In response to the tragic incident, the association sent a memorandum to the Chief Minister, urging government intervention and calling for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s involvement in ensuring the safety of female medical professionals. The memorandum highlighted the lack of adequate safety measures for female doctors and nurses, particularly during night shifts. It also pointed out the absence of dedicated duty rooms in many hospitals, leaving female staff vulnerable.
Support from Diploma Pharmacists
The Diploma Pharmacist Association, led by Provincial President Sudha Kukreti and General Secretary Satish Chandra Pandey, has extended its support to the Indian Medical Association’s nationwide OPD boycott. Pharmacists across the state participated in the protest by wearing black ribbons to demonstrate their solidarity.
The boycott is a response to the growing concerns over the safety of female healthcare workers, and the participating doctors and pharmacists have called for immediate action to address the security lapses in hospitals, ensuring that such incidents do not recur.
