Muslim man allegedly changed his name to befriend woman, forced her to convert

In Nainital, a case of befriending a girl by changing name and then pressurizing her after rape to change her religion has come to the fore. In the case, the police have started investigation by filing a report on the Tahrir of the victim girl, including the accused, under other sections, including pressurizing the accused for conversion. According to the police, this is the first case registered in Kumaon under the Uttarakhand Religious Freedom Act 2018.

Kotwal Arun Kumar Saini said that a girl resident of the area gave a complaint to the police alleging that Bambagher, a resident of Saqib Saifi alias Shiv Thakur, changed his name to befriend her. On getting acquainted, Saqib raped her. When she came to know the reality of Saqib, she protested.

It is alleged that the youth beat her and threatened to kill her. After this, Saqib along with his friends chased her sister as well. Told in Tahrir that the relatives of the accused are also pressurizing her to convert.

Kotwal said that on the basis of Tahrir, police have registered a case against Saqib Saifi alias Shiv Thakur, Saba, Yunus, Rahila and Gazala under Section 323/354/354D/376/504/506 and Uttarakhand Religious Freedom Act 2018.

Told that Tahrir has also been given on behalf of the accused in which the girl has talked about converting religion for marriage. There is also an allegation of harassment. Here, CO Baljit Singh Bhakuni said that the matter is being investigated.

No mandate related to new conversion has been received yet. This case cannot be counted under conversion. The new mandate has a provision for severe punishment for the accused. After the order comes, action will be taken according to the new rule.

The report has been registered under section 3 of the Uttarakhand Religious Freedom Act. Although it can be kept in the category of pressure for conversion, not conversion. After investigation, action will be taken as per the Act says Pankaj Bhatt, SSP, Nainital.
