The ambitious Rishikesh-Karnprayag Rail Link is set to become a game-changer for Uttarakhand's connectivity and economic development. Aimed at enhancing access to the state's remote and hilly regions, this strategic railway project is progressing steadily and is expected to revolutionize travel, tourism, and trade within the region.
Rishikesh-Karnprayag Rail Link Set to Transform Uttarakhand's Connectivity
The 125-kilometre-long railway line will connect Rishikesh, the gateway to the Garhwal Himalayas, with Karnprayag in Chamoli district, passing through key towns such as Srinagar, Rudraprayag, and Gauchar. Once operational, the rail line will drastically reduce travel time between these locations, making pilgrimages to Badrinath, Kedarnath, and Hemkund Sahib more accessible.
With sustainability in mind, special care is being taken to minimize the environmental impact
Being executed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), the project involves the construction of 17 tunnels and 35 bridges, showcasing modern engineering amidst challenging terrain. As per officials, around 80% of tunneling work has already been completed.
Apart from easing travel for locals and tourists alike, the rail link is expected to significantly boost the local economy, provide employment opportunities, and encourage investments in the tourism and hospitality sectors. The project also holds strategic importance from a defense and disaster-response standpoint due to its proximity to border areas and high seismic activity zones.
With sustainability in mind, special care is being taken to minimize the environmental impact of the construction. Advanced technologies and safety protocols are being implemented to ensure smooth operations once the line is functional.
The Rishikesh-Karnprayag Rail Link aligns with the central government's vision of improving infrastructure in the Himalayan states and integrating them more closely with the national rail network. Once completed, this project is expected to stand as a symbol of progress and connectivity for the people of Uttarakhand.
