Turkey-magnitude earthquake could hit Uttarakhand: Report

Earthquake

The earthquake on February 6 in Turkey and Syria has destroyed many cities. Since this disaster, more than 40 thousand dead bodies have been removed from the debris. Meanwhile, now the Chief Scientist of Seismology at the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Dr. N. Rao has also issued a warning of a big earthquake like Turkey in Uttarakhand. In the midst of the Joshimath disaster, scientists have now issued a warning.

Warning of big earthquake like Turkey in Uttarakhand too

As per report, Rao pointed out that a lot of tension is building up under the surface in the Uttarakhand region, and a ‘great earthquake’ is necessary to relieve the tension.

However, he added that the date and time of an earthquake cannot be predicted, and the destruction will depend on many factors that vary from one geographic region to another.

Every activity is being monitored in Uttarakhand

He said, ‘We have set up around 80 seismic stations in the Himalayan region with focus on Uttarakhand. We are monitoring the situation on real time. Our data shows that stress is accumulating on a large scale. ‘ We have GPS networks in the area. The GPS points are moving, indicating the changes happening below the surface.

When the earthquake will happen, it cannot be predicted now.
Variometric GPS data processing is one of the reliable methods for determining what is happening to Earth, Rao said. Rao insisted that, ‘We cannot predict the exact time and date, but a massive earthquake can hit Uttarakhand anytime.’ Variometers measure variations in the Earth’s magnetic field.

The top scientist’s comments came in the backdrop of landslides at Joshimath, now considered the gateway to pilgrimage sites like Badrinath and Kedarnath after the devastation in Turkey and Syria. Also, the Char Dham Yatra is going to start in about two months. Lakhs of pilgrims turn to Uttarakhand through this journey.

Actually, earthquakes of magnitude 8 and above on the Richter scale are quite destructive. There was an earthquake of 7.8 Richter scale in Turkey, which caused havoc in the entire city. More than 45000 people have died in this disaster. Scientist pointed out that technically it cannot be called a major earthquake, but the devastation in Turkey was high due to many factors including poor quality construction. He said that there is a possibility of an earthquake of magnitude more than 8 in the Himalayan region which extends from Jammu and Kashmir to Arunachal Pradesh.
