The tragedy happened while the car was transporting a wedding procession from Laldhang to the Dhumakot neighborhood of Birokhal. To inspect the situation, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also went to the Disaster Management Authority office in Dehradun.

“25 people found dead in the Pauri Garwhal bus accident that took place last night in the Birokhal area of Dhumakot. Police and SDRF rescued 21 people overnight…injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals,” said DGP Ashok Kumar on Wednesday morning.

“The bus accident in Pauri, Uttarakhand is heart-rending. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. I hope those who have been injured recover at the earliest. Rescue operations are underway. All possible assistance will be provided to those affected,” tweeted PM Modi.

Soon after the tragedy, rescue efforts had been started with the assistance of the villagers. Four SDRF teams were present, according to Manikant Mishra, the commandant of the Uttarakhand SDRF.

“A wedding procession had left in a bus from here, Laldhang; an accident occurred. Information is being taken from the family members. Around 40-42 people were on the bus, including women and children. We are in continuous touch with the Pauri police and villagers. Even though the tragedy happened yesterday at about 7:30 p.m., darkness made rescue efforts difficult. There were no lights set up at the scene of the accident, according to witnesses. Eyewitnesses said that the villagers were struggling to rescue those stuck inside the bus with the help of the flashlights on their mobile phones.
