Uttarakhand News: Villagers in Jaunsar-Bawar of Uttarakhand have unanimously decided against holdings weddings in hefty hotels for putting an end to wasteful spending.

Villagers gathered at the Mahasu Devta Temple in Panchra-Bhanjra, Khat Shilgaon with a view to put an end to extravagance in weddings and other events. The assembly of villagers prohibited wedding arrangements in expensive parks, hotels and similar venues. Moreover, the meeting also put a blanket ban on women from wearing costly jewellery.
Detailed Decision
Chaired by Khat Syana Tulsiram Sharma, the village meeting focused on preventing unnecessary expenses. It was agreed upon by all attendees that wedding events must happen only in homes and villages. This means that marriages would now not happen at farms, expensive parks, hotels or marriage venues.
Women received permission to just wear 3 pieces of jewellery at weddings. The village meeting also barred DJs, beer and fast food from events.
Strict Penalties Imposed
For first weddings, invitations carry a maximum limit of ₹100 while Kanyadan contributions remain at personal discretion. The meeting warned that violators face a ₹1 lakh fine plus complete social boycott.
This community-driven move is intended to preserve traditions while protecting families from getting into any kind of debt trap.
