The Uttarakhand government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, has given a New Year gift to specialist doctors by extending their retirement age from 60 to 65 years. The decision aims to address the shortage of specialist doctors in the state and improve healthcare services, particularly in remote and rural areas.

550 Specialist Doctors to Benefit

Health Secretary Dr. R. Rajesh Kumar confirmed that the government has officially issued the order to increase the retirement age by five years. This move is expected to benefit around 550 specialist doctors across Uttarakhand, ensuring continuity in medical expertise and enhancing healthcare accessibility for citizens.

The decision reflects the state government's commitment to providing quality healthcare services, as efforts are being made to strengthen medical infrastructure and retain experienced doctors. The health department believes that extending service tenure will bridge the gap in the availability of specialist medical professionals.

Conditions for Service Extension

According to the Health Secretary, only doctors who actively treat patients in hospitals will be eligible for this service extension. However, doctors will not be assigned administrative or financial responsibilities after reaching the age of 60. Instead, they will continue serving as Chief Consultants in their respective specialties under the existing medical framework.

Additionally, these specialist doctors will not be eligible for further promotions. Their salary increments and other service benefits will be granted as per government norms, similar to other state employees, both during service and upon retirement.

With this progressive healthcare reform, Uttarakhand aims to strengthen its medical workforce and ensure that even the most remote regions have access to expert medical care.
