Uttarakhand News: Approximately 35% of Joshimath, which experienced severe land subsidence last year, has been identified as a high-risk zone, according to Ranjit Sinha, the secretary of the disaster management department. This revelation came during a public consultation on rehabilitation and reconstruction, where senior officials from the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) were present.
High-Risk Zones Identified in Joshimath
Sinha informed the public that technical teams, conducting on-field surveys since January 18, have pinpointed 14 areas in Joshimath categorized as high-risk zones. In response, the government has allocated 25 hectares of land near Gauchar in Bomoth village for relocation purposes. However, affected individuals expressed reluctance to relocate elsewhere.
Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Plans Discussed
The secretary emphasized that no new construction would be allowed in Joshimath until experts confirm the stabilization of the land beneath the town. Sinha warned of actions by the district administration against any unauthorized construction.
In the midst of these developments, the Joshimath Bachao Sangharsh Samiti (JBSS), a residents' group, submitted a nine-point memorandum during the public consultation. They raised concerns about the non-fulfillment of promises made in April 2023 and urged authorities to address the issues promptly.
