Uttarakhand News: Nagar Nikay Elections in Uttarakhand to be Conducted Within Six Months

Lok Sabha Elections 2024

Uttarakhand News: After the completion of Lok Sabha elections in Uttarakhand, the focus has now shifted to the impending Nagar Nikay (urban local body) elections in the state. The government has indicated its intention to conduct these elections in a timely manner.

Nagar Nikay Elections in Uttarakhand to be Conducted Within Six Months

In a significant development regarding the conduct of Nagar Nikay elections, the High Court of Nainital has dismissed the public interest petitions filed against the appointment of administrators for Nagar Nikays. The petitions sought to extend the tenure of administrators in Nagar Nikays, which is set to expire within six months as per Section 10A (4) of the Uttarakhand Municipalities Act, 1916.

The petitioners, including Mohammad Anas from Jaspur and Rajeev Lochan Sah from Nainital, had urged the High Court to expedite the elections for Nagar Nikays and appoint administrators until then. However, the court’s decision to dismiss the petitions indicates that the Nagar Nikay elections are likely to be conducted within the stipulated six-month period.

Previously, the government had assured the High Court of conducting Nagar Nikay elections within six months. With the current tenure of administrators ending in June, it is evident that elections for Nagar Nikays will be held in May. There are a total of 97 Nagar Nikays in Uttarakhand, with the recent addition bringing the total to 110.

However, elections for seven Nagar Nikays, which were recently designated, cannot be held concurrently with others due to logistical constraints. Elections for these Nagar Nikays will be scheduled separately.

Nagar Nikays in Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Gangotri do not hold elections due to their religious significance

Notably, Nagar Nikays in Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Gangotri do not hold elections due to their religious significance. Furthermore, elections for the Roorkee Nagar Nigam and Bazpur Nagar Palika Parishad will be held later as their terms are set to expire next year. Additionally, legal proceedings regarding the formation of the Sirorikala Nagar Nikay are currently on hold.

The imminent Nagar Nikay elections in Uttarakhand mark a crucial step in the democratic process, ensuring local governance and representation for urban areas across the state.
