Uttarakhand News: In the run-up to the 19th Asian Games set to begin soon, the Manoj Sarkar Stadium in Uttarakhand's Rudrapur has exposed a distressing tale of neglect, impacting Indian athletes' training and dreams. For the past two years, halls within the stadium's multipurpose building have been occupied by the supply department, leaving athletes in sports like karate, taekwondo, and judo facing discomfort and deteriorating facilities. Approximately 55 state, national, and international-level athletes have been adversely affected.

National-level karate player Jashanpreet Singh highlighted the distressing situation, describing the foul odor resulting from rotten rations. This has led to a relocation of their training. Karate coach Laxman Singh emphasized that the spoiled rations have disrupted training sessions and created unsanitary conditions, making practice nearly impossible.

The issue began in 2021

The issue began in 2021 when the stadium was repurposed for storing rations meant for flood disaster relief. However, due to official neglect, these rations have deteriorated and become infested with insects, creating a foul odor and attracting rodents. Despite a district administration investigation in April, the supply department has not taken decisive action regarding the spoiled rations. Consequently, athletes have been compelled to train outdoors on the stadium grounds.

Girish Kumar, the in-charge district sports officer, expressed concern about the multipurpose sports hall's deteriorating condition and reported that the supply department has yet to address the issue despite receiving a letter urging them to remove the ruined rations. This situation highlights the challenges and neglect Indian athletes face as they strive to pursue their sporting aspirations.
