Uttarakhand News: Uttarakhand Introduces Smart Prepaid Meters to Manage Electricity Consumption

The state government has announced the launch of the Smart Prepaid Metering Scheme, placing control of electricity consumption directly into the hands of consumers.

Uttarakhand News: Amidst the soaring demand for electricity, Uttarakhand is gearing up to implement a significant change in electricity management. The state government has announced the launch of the Smart Prepaid Metering Scheme, placing control of electricity consumption directly into the hands of consumers.

Uttarakhand Introduces Smart Prepaid Meters to Manage Electricity Consumption

Under the scheme, consumers who excessively consume electricity, surpassing standard usage limits, will face direct deductions from their accounts by the Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) headquarters. Commencing in May, the scheme aims to install prepaid meters in the homes of 15,87,870 electricity consumers across the state. Dehradun in the Garhwal region and Haldwani in the Kumaon region will be the initial areas to implement this initiative.

Consumers will recharge them based on their electricity consumption.

The control room for monitoring these prepaid meters will be established at the UPPCL headquarters, facilitating individual monitoring of electricity usage for each meter. Once the meters are installed, consumers will recharge them based on their electricity consumption. Monthly billing cycles will be introduced, putting an end to billing disputes and compensations. Consumers will also be relieved from paying deposits for electricity connections.

Any previously collected deposit amounts will be refunded to consumers. Following the depletion of recharge amounts, electricity supply will be automatically halted for a specific period. This scheme also abolishes traditional practices such as connecting and disconnecting electricity, meter readings, bill delivery, and penalties for late payments.

In the near future, consumers will no longer have to collectively deal with electricity cuts. The Smart Prepaid Meters will enable the electricity department to identify consumers who exceed their designated usage limits. Such consumers will first receive warnings from UPPCL before their electricity supply is curtailed. Additionally, the meters will pinpoint areas with excessive electricity consumption, aiding in the detection of electricity theft and facilitating prompt action by UPPCL authorities.
