The recently concluded three-tier panchayat elections in Uttarakhand have brought cheer to both major political parties—Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). While Congress has made notable inroads in Dehradun district, including the stronghold of the outgoing Zila Panchayat President Madhu Chauhan, the BJP also retained a significant share of the seats.

Congress’ Comeback in Dehradun

In a surprising and morale-boosting outcome, Congress-backed candidates won 12 out of 16 seats they had officially contested in Dehradun district. Of particular political significance was the party’s performance in Madhu Chauhan’s traditional bastion, where Congress managed to win 7 out of 11 seats, disrupting BJP’s dominance.

Out of the 30 Zila Panchayat seats in Dehradun, Congress had officially declared candidates on only 16, while the rest were contested by candidates with Congress affiliation or support. The improved performance is being seen as a revival sign for Congress, which has struggled in recent state and national elections.

BJP Still Holds Strong

Despite Congress' gains, the BJP remains upbeat, securing 7 seats in the Dehradun Zila Panchayat and putting up a strong fight across the district. The party had declared candidates for 28 of the 30 seats, signaling its continued grassroots organizational strength.

Party workers celebrated the results late Thursday night, with senior BJP leaders expressing satisfaction over their overall performance, especially in blocks where they managed to maintain or increase their vote share.

Congress Leads in Jaunsar and Chakrata

One of the most notable victories for Congress came in the Jaunsar-Bawar region, where it clinched 7 of the 11 Zila Panchayat seats, leaving BJP with 3 and one seat going to an independent.

In Chakrata block, Congress emerged dominant, winning 5 out of 6 seats, with one seat going to an independent candidate. In the Kalsi block, Congress claimed victory on the Mangroli and Aara seats, while BJP secured the remaining three. From Raigi seat in Chakrata, Congress' Shyam Singh Chauhan registered a notable win.

A Ray of Hope for Congress

This Panchayat election has injected new energy into the Congress camp, which has been on the back foot in Uttarakhand politics. In the 2023 Assembly elections, Congress could manage only 19 seats, while BJP stormed to power with 47 seats. The 2024 Lok Sabha elections saw BJP sweeping all seats in the state, leaving Congress empty-handed.
