In order to ensure emission-free travel and conserve the environment, the Uttarakhand Transport Department has planned to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations every 26 kilometres on the Char Dham yatra routes.

The government will establish a network of 154 EV charging stations to cover almost 4,500 km of roads in the hill state, according to the state's department of transportation.

The EV charging network will cover 12 routes in the Garhwal division and 9 routes in Kumaon in the initial phase of implementation. Estimated costs for the project range from 40 and 50 crore rupees.

Similar to that, those places are marked on the route to well-known pilgrimage and tourist attractions in the Kumaon region. 33 spots on the Char Dham yatra routes have already been chosen and reserved by the state government for the installation of EV charging stations.

For the following year, the proposed EV charging stations on the Chardham roads will cover about 950 kilometres. By 2025, a charging station would be put in place every 100 kilometres around the state as part of the second phase.

Sanat Kumar Singh, Joint Transport Commissioner, said, "The proposal has been sent to the state government and the state government has sent it to the Centre. After getting the consent to make electric charging points on the Char Dham Yatra route, all the stations will be completed next year."

The Uttarakhand department of transportation will use its resources to install charging stations around the state, in addition to along the Chardham Yatra route, at intervals of 50 and 100 kilometres. The state has submitted the entire proposal to the Center for review and funding.

"Along with this, under the third phase, by the year 2030, an electric charging point will be made at a distance of every 50 kilometres across the state," Singh added.
