Akhilesh Yadav ally backs Uniform Civil Code, wants ‘one law for all’

Om Prakash Rajbhar, the leader of the Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP) and an MLA for Uttar Pradesh, stated that he supports the Center’s efforts to implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across the nation, adding that “there should be one law for all.”

According to Rajbhar, his party would support “whatever is in the interest of the country.”

A bill enacting a uniform civil code may be introduced by the Centre during the monsoon session of Parliament. The bill can be referred to the parliamentary standing committee, which will hear opinions on the Uniform Civil Code from various interested parties.

While certain opposition groups, including the DMK, JD(U), National Conference, and Congress, voiced opposition to the introduction of a Uniform Civil Code, other groups, like Shiv Sena (UBT) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), claimed they welcomed the Center’s initiative.

The term “UCC” refers to a common body of rules that are applicable to all Indian citizens, are not based on religion, and deal with a variety of personal issues, including marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.

On June 14, the Law Commission began a new consultation process on UCC by requesting opinions on the politically sensitive matter from stakeholders, including the general public and recognised religious organisations.
