This bizarre fraud case in India turned out to be a complete fantasy when the fraudster Harshvardhan Jain posed as a diplomat of countries that never existed. His rented bungalow in Ghaziabad was modelled on the West Arctic Embassy, and it was inside this bungalow that he spun a web of absurdities that seemed more fictitious than real, and the house of cards collapsed when the Uttar Pradesh STF intervened.
Diplomatic Disneyland in Ghaziabad
Following a tip-off from some central agencies, the Noida unit of the UP STF raided Jain's embassy on July 22. Their search yielded some astonishing finds: 12 fake diplomatic passports, four luxury cars with fake diplomatic number plates, documents bearing the stamp of the Ministry of External Affairs, two fake PAN cards, and Rs 44.7 lakh in cash. Jain had also acquired rubber stamps and press cards of 34 fake countries and companies to further cement his act.
Jain sold fake dreams of foreign openings to desperate job-seekers and aspiring companies as he styled himself as Baron of West Arctica, Ambassador of Ladonia, and Consul-General of Saborga.
When Fantasy Met Fraud
Jain did not merely create nations; he created an entire alternate existence. Using the visual storytelling and phony credentials, he created an image of credibility with photoshopped photographs of the most popular Prime Minister Modi and Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, as well as the fake promise of offering them visas. STF even suspects that he may have used a hawala network using shell companies to launder the money he had received in these bogus diplomatic deals.
These micronations—West Arctica, Poulvia, and Saborga—are mere fictitious states that are not recognised by the world over. But Jain sold them as franchises to the Western world.
Legal Crash Landing
A case is filed in the Kavi Nagar Police Station as an FIR, and the search is on. The scandal highlights not just regulatory loopholes but also how easily fake officials can influence the will of the public to be seen as officials. In a society where fancy clothes and diplomacy are the way to the elite, Jain used diplomacy as a shroud and hid behind suits, stamps, and sedans.
