CM Yogi Adityanath: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath paid floral tribute to the statue of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh on his death anniversary at the Vidhan Sabha premises here. Speaking on this occasion, CM Adityanath said, “Today is the pious death anniversary of the great son of Mother India, the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and the former Prime Minister of the country, the messiah of farmers, Bharat Ratna Chaudhary Charan Singh ji. This time, on behalf of the people of the state, I humbly pay my tributes to him.

The Messiah whose vision guides India still

CM Yogi said that Charan Singh had made it clear that the path of the country’s development passes through the villages, village fields and barns, and the farmers should always remain on the development agenda and a part of the government’s priority. The nation remembers him as a pioneer of land reforms, the architect of the land ceiling law and a staunch advocate of rural development and farmers’ welfare.

A Life Dedicated to Indian Soil

Chaudhary Charan Singh was born on December 23, 1902. As he grew up, he saw the plight of India’s peasantry up close, and this inspired him to spend the rest of his life fighting for farmers. His political career was marked by landmark legislations like Uttar Pradesh Zamindari Abolition and Land Reforms Act, 1950 and Consolidation of Holdings Act of 1953, which resulted in abolition of exploitative zamindari system in the state. He was the Prime Minister of India from July 1979 to January 1980 and was the first non-Congress Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1967.

Bharat Ratna and a Living Legacy

The Bharat Ratna, the nation’s highest civilian honour, was conferred on Charan Singh posthumously by President Droupadi Murmu in 2024, in an extremely emotional moment for the entire nation. The Uttar Pradesh government continues to commemorate his legacy through various programmes, including the Chaudhary Charan Singh Seed Park in Lucknow. CM Adityanath reiterated that the double-engine government is committed to carrying forward the legacy and vision of Charan Singh of prosperous villages and empowered farmers. Vice President C P Radhakrishnan and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also paid tributes, hailing Singh’s contributions to farmers and rural India.
