He said that Savitribai Phule played a historic role in promoting education for girls at a time when women’s access to education was extremely limited in society. Her efforts helped lay the foundation for greater awareness and empowerment among women.

Savitribai Phule is widely regarded as a pioneer of women’s education in India and worked tirelessly alongside her husband, social reformer Jyotirao Phule, to promote social equality and challenge discriminatory practices.

The Chief Minister said her life and work continue to inspire generations to work toward education, social justice and equality, which remain essential for building a progressive society.

He also emphasised that remembering such reformers helps society recognise the importance of education and empowerment in achieving inclusive development across the country.

Savitribai Phule is remembered for establishing one of the first schools for girls in Pune in the 19th century, a step that marked a turning point in the movement for women’s education in India. Despite facing strong social opposition, she continued her efforts to spread education among women and marginalised communities.

Her work also focused on improving the condition of widows, promoting social equality and challenging caste-based discrimination. Through her initiatives, she contributed significantly to the broader social reform movement in the country.

The Chief Minister noted that Savitribai Phule’s legacy remains relevant today, as her dedication to education and equality continues to guide efforts aimed at empowering women and creating a more inclusive society in India.
