Congress: Since Brijlal Khabri and six other zonal vice presidents assumed leadership of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) one month ago, the new executive committee has still not been established.
Infighting seems to be a problem for the state branch of the Congress in almost every district. Even while other major parties have already begun planning for the next elections for urban local bodies, the party has not been able to mobilise cadres.

New UPCC executive committee may have 120 to 130 members

A party leader said, “Yes, Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee is yet to have an executive committee. New UPCC executive committee may have 120 to 130 members. As of now, newly appointed zonal presidents are visiting the districts allotted to them. The executive committee may be constituted soon after these tours are complete.”

“There will be only one executive committee. Its new office bearers will report to the UPCC president through the zonal-president in-charge of their respective district. The Congress may also appoint new presidents in most of the districts and this process too will take some time,” according to this party leader. Shakuntala Patel, the district women's congress president from Jalaun, walked out of a party meeting on Tuesday in protest.
Anil Yadav, the recently nominated zone president, was officially welcomed at the gathering.

“Yes, I had to leave the meeting as no proper seating arrangements were made for women members. The women are being neglected in every party,” according to Patel.

'An issue of ego' claims Rehan Siddiqui, the president of the Jalaun city Congress

“There was no problem with the seating arrangement. I conducted the programme and it appears to be an issue of ego on the part of district women Congress leader,” Rehan Siddiqui, the president of the Jalaun city Congress, said.

Senior members of Congress maintained that events of this nature are frequent across all political parties. They believed that such occurrences did not necessarily indicate party divisions.

According to a top leader, the party is experiencing upheavals at every level. He added that the party would need to work harder to mobilise all party members and prepare the cadres for the next urban local body elections. The party's old guard may have reasons to protest at various levels, he said.

District leaders have been given instructions

The district leaders have been instructed to scrutinise the electoral rolls and fix any issues as soon as possible, the leader said, adding that the state unit was making preparations for the urban local body elections.
In a letter to the state election commission on Tuesday, UPCC President Brijlal Khabri also raised concerns about discrepancies in the electoral rolls. Khabri urged Manoj Kumar, the state election commissioner, to extend the deadline so that the irregularities in the electoral rolls could be fixed.

"The Congress leaders need to mobilise the people and put in a lot of effort to grow the party in UP. According to Professor SK Dwivedi, a former head of the political science department at Lucknow University, the party needs to address issues that affect the people or it would fall behind and have a grim future in the state.
