On Sunday, the Noida police arrested a gang that had been using online dating apps to befriend hundreds of women in order to con them into believing they were customs officials.
The Gautam Buddh Nagar, Police Commisionerate took to it's Twitter handle to inform the detailing of the arrest. "Gang doing fraud in the name of customs by befriending women through an online dating app was busted, 06 Nigerian accused including a woman arrested, 03 laptops, 17 mobiles, internet dongles, Rs 40,860/- in cash, 03 passports, etc recovered from possession. Police Station Sector-20 Noida!"
While talking to reporters, DCP Harish Chander said, "The accused impersonated foreign nationals and came in touch with women through dating apps. After gaining the trust of the victims they say that they are coming to India to meet them on a certain date."
He tried to claim that they got in touch with the women and notified them that they had been detained at customs because they were going to carry expensive gifts and needed money to be released. He added that the arrested woman, a Nigerian, had tried to pretend to be a customs official.
