There’s good news for travellers in Uttar Pradesh, as the much-awaited Meerut–Budaun section of the Ganga Expressway is set to open for vehicular movement in November. The 130-kilometer stretch, being built by Larsen & Toubro (L&T), is now in its final construction phase. Officials from the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) and the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) have confirmed that all finishing touches, including signage, lighting, and road safety systems, are being completed ahead of the launch.
90% of Work Completed
The Ganga Expressway, spanning a total of 594 kilometers, was originally scheduled for completion by October 12, 2025, but prolonged monsoon rains delayed progress slightly. However, UPEIDA’s latest progress report shows that 90% of the project has been completed, and only the approach road to the Simbhaoli Railway Overbridge remains pending, which will be finished by the end of October.
Infrastructure and Safety Enhancements
The entry point to the expressway has been developed at Bijauli village, near kilometre 16 on Hapur Road, Meerut. The first 15-kilometer stretch is now equipped with welcome signage, streetlights, speed meters, and CCTV cameras connected to an advanced central control room for real-time monitoring and traffic management.
Engineering Highlights
Between Meerut and Budaun, a total of 161 bridges and underpasses have been completed, including 5 major bridges, 28 minor bridges, 9 flyovers or railway overbridges, and 117 major and minor underpasses. These structures are designed to ensure seamless connectivity, faster travel, and enhanced safety for both vehicles and pedestrians.
Boost to Connectivity and Development
Once operational, this section of the Ganga Expressway will drastically reduce travel time between western and eastern Uttar Pradesh, linking Meerut to Prayagraj. It is also expected to boost regional trade, tourism, and industrial activity, paving the way for balanced economic growth across the state.
Officials noted that once this phase becomes operational, work will accelerate on the Budaun–Prayagraj section, aiming for full completion in the coming year.
