The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is fast-tracking the construction of the Ghaziabad-Kanpur Expressway, a 380-kilometre greenfield project being developed under the Green Highway Policy. The expressway, designed to enhance regional connectivity and promote sustainable infrastructure, will significantly reduce travel time between two of Uttar Pradesh’s major industrial hubs — Ghaziabad and Kanpur — from the current 8 hours to just 5.

Key Route and Districts Covered

Once operational, the expressway will pass through nine districts of Uttar Pradesh: Ghaziabad, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Kasganj, Farrukhabad, Kannauj, Unnao, and Kanpur. It will serve as a vital corridor for industrial and logistics traffic moving between western and central UP.

According to NHAI officials, the four-lane expressway has been planned with future expansion to six lanes, keeping in mind increasing vehicular load over the next two decades. The expressway is expected to be fully operational by 2026.

Environment-Friendly Development

As part of the Green Highway Policy, the Ghaziabad-Kanpur Expressway is being developed with a strong emphasis on eco-friendly practices. The project incorporates sustainable construction techniques, green cover development, and efficient drainage systems aimed at reducing environmental impact.

Potential Extension to Jewar Airport

The NHAI is also considering an extension of the expressway up to the Jewar International Airport in Noida, further enhancing its utility for both passengers and commercial logistics. On the other end, the southern stretch of the expressway will connect with the upcoming 62.7-kilometre Kanpur-Lucknow Expressway, while the northern stretch will feed into National Highway 9, thereby improving overall inter-city and intra-state mobility.

Economic and Infrastructure Impact

The project is expected to provide a major boost to economic activities, particularly in Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns along the route. Improved road connectivity is likely to attract investment, generate employment, and facilitate easier movement of goods and services.

With completion expected in 2026, the Ghaziabad-Kanpur Expressway is set to become one of the key infrastructure projects transforming travel and commerce across Uttar Pradesh.
