In a significant anti-encroachment drive, the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) on Tuesday cleared nearly 10 hectares of prime land in the Kanawani area, which falls under the Indirapuram Extension. The action involved demolition of illegal shanties, permanent structures, and commercial setups that had mushroomed over the years.

The large-scale operation was conducted with the support of civil police and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel to ensure law and order during the demolition.

Residential Development and ₹800 Crore Revenue Expected

According to Rudresh Shukla, GDA's media coordinator, the freed land—measuring approximately 10 hectares—has been earmarked for residential development.

“The land had been under illegal occupation for several years. With its strategic location near East Delhi and proximity to major transport corridors like NH-9 and the Hindon elevated road, this land holds immense value. It will now be planned for residential plots and group housing, with an expected revenue generation of nearly ₹800 crore,” Shukla said.

Enhanced Connectivity and Future Planning

The land is also vital from an infrastructure standpoint. The GDA has recently planned to develop two additional ramps on the Hindon elevated road, aimed at easing access for commuters from Indirapuram and Vasundhara to Delhi. The cost of this connectivity project is estimated at ₹200 crore, for which funds have been requested from the 16th Finance Commission.

Fencing to Prevent Future Encroachments

The GDA has now initiated steps to fence the entire reclaimed land to prevent any further encroachments. Officials confirmed that detailed planning will soon begin to develop the land in line with its designated residential land use.

“This is a major step towards reclaiming and utilizing urban land efficiently. With improved planning, we aim to provide better housing options while ensuring urban order,” said a senior GDA official.
