Ghaziabad News: Girl's Hostel Basement Of ABES Engineering College Turns Into Swimming Pool; Where Are Basic Amenities For Students

The basement of the girls' hostel at ABES Engineering College, Ghaziabad, was flooded with rainwater, turning it into a swimming pool. This was a scary and worrying event that made people wonder about the safety and upkeep of students' buildings. This occurred after a torrential downpour overnight on Wednesday, 31 July 2025, which created a knee-deep water level both in the basement and in the rooms located on the lower floors of the hostel building.

Effect on students and their possessions

The floods had affected the normal life of the students staying there, causing a lot of damage to their household things like clothes, Books, and important papers. A viral video that went around on social media highlighted the terrible condition beneath the three-level basement, where rainwater was still running. Corridors and parts of some rooms were under water, and students had to avoid watery quadrants, which were not only health hazards but also safety deterrents.

Shortage of the Basic Amenities and Drainage System

This has revealed the deprivation of sanitary facilities and quality drainage systems in the girls' hostel of ABES Engineering College. Frustration and fear of being harmed are the words many students and their families are saying as they demand that the college administration and especially the local law enforcement respond to the situation. There are concerns being presented as to whether the college was ready to deal with such emergencies, given the fact that the region is used to heavy monsoon rains.

Irresponsible Planning of Infrastructure

According to the sources, there were no proper preventive measures taken, and even after being given words of caution during the monsoon season, such flooding could have been obsolete. As a three-floor construction, especially in a basement form, it could not only be utilized as a storage and common facility area, but also has been proven highly incompetent as it was not quite resistant to rainwater ingress, thus raising grave concerns with regard to upkeep and infrastructural planning.

Students and Parents Demands

This has worsened fears concerning the standards of living conditions accorded to the female students by the college hostels. The residents do not, however, only require the short-term solutions of water removal and its repair; they also require the long-term measures, which involve enhanced drainage systems, basement waterproofing, as well as emergency plans.

Health and Safety Issues

Although there have been no injuries as yet, the psychological distress, inconvenience, and damage to the property of students are unquantifiable. There is also the issue of a bigger problem that faces most learning institutions, because the infrastructure in most learning institutions cannot support the well-being of the students regarding their levels of safety and comfort.

Applications to Action and Accountability

Local civic organizations have been invited in to check the place and make sure that a similar carelessness will not happen again. The incident is a lesson to other institutions in Gaziabad and other parts not to hesitate to carry out maintenance in their institutions, and also to protect students against such dangers.
