A major boost to regional connectivity was witnessed today as 10 new flights were launched from Hindon Airport, Ghaziabad, operated by IndiGo Airlines, connecting eight cities including Ahmedabad and Indore.
The new routes were inaugurated by Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, who flagged off the flights to Ahmedabad and Indore. The launch marks a significant milestone in expanding civil aviation access in Western Uttar Pradesh and surrounding regions.
“Earlier, Hindon Airport was seen as just a backup to Delhi, but now it is ready to become the backbone of Delhi’s aviation network,” said the Civil Aviation Minister during the flag-off ceremony.
Cities Now Connected from Hindon Airport
The newly launched IndiGo flights connect Ahmedabad, Indore, and six other cities, forming part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, which focuses on enhancing regional air connectivity.
Minister Naidu noted that flight operations to additional destinations are in the pipeline, adding that the expansion reflects not only the aspirations of Ghaziabad but also of Uttar Pradesh and India at large.
Doubling Passenger Footfall
The Minister emphasized that efforts are underway to connect Hindon Airport with every major city, and Indigo’s participation has elevated these efforts to new heights. He added that with the increasing number of flight options, passenger footfall at the airport has doubled in recent times.
Expansion Plans: Request for 9 Acres of Land
While addressing infrastructure gaps, Naidu acknowledged that Hindon Airport currently lacks many facilities expected at a full-fledged terminal.
“At the moment, it looks more like a railway station than an airport,” he said, noting that a proposal has been made to allocate 9 acres of land for airport expansion.
Once the land is approved and allocated, the government plans to upgrade Hindon Airport to match the standards of other major airports across the country.
A Game Changer for Western Uttar Pradesh
The launch of these flights is a significant development for Ghaziabad and the NCR region, offering faster, affordable, and more accessible air travel. The project is expected to ease pressure on Delhi’s IGI Airport, and provide new travel options to the growing population of nearby towns and cities.
As Hindon Airport positions itself as a key player in the regional aviation map, today's launch is seen as a step forward in making civil aviation more inclusive and widespread across India.
