The Gorakhpur–Panipat Expressway project is undergoing a fresh alignment survey that may significantly alter its original route. While earlier surveys had proposed the expressway to pass through Basti, Gonda, and Sitapur, the new alignment is expected to connect Nepal-bordering districts with key cities like Lucknow, Sitapur, Bareilly, Meerut, and Shamli, ultimately reaching Panipat in Haryana.
According to officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the alignment survey is in an advanced stage and is expected to be completed soon. Following this, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared and submitted to the state government for approval.
Expressway Survey Enters Third Phase
The third survey for the expressway alignment has been completed, while alignment work in 22 districts is currently underway. Separate DPRs are being created for each of the three proposed alignments to analyze the required number of bridges, overpasses, and flyovers. Only one alignment will be finalized after thorough evaluation. Officials estimate that this phase may take up to three more months to complete.
Originally, the project was managed by NHAI's Rae Bareli unit, but now the responsibility has been shifted to the Ayodhya unit. Initially, the expressway was supposed to terminate at Shamli, but it has now been extended to Panipat, offering a broader connectivity scope.
Project to Be Completed in Two Phases
As per the revised plan, the expressway will be developed in two phases:
Phase 1: From Panipat to Puwayan (approx. 450 km)
Phase 2: From Puwayan to Gorakhpur (approx. 300 km)
Once completed, the expressway will seamlessly connect eastern and western Uttar Pradesh, drastically reducing travel time between Gorakhpur and Shamli to just 7–8 hours.
Alignment Survey Underway in Gorakhpur
In Gorakhpur, the alignment survey is actively being conducted, with the proposed expressway expected to pass through 50 villages. NHAI has requested land revenue records from the district administration to facilitate planning.
Districts Likely to Be Connected by the Expressway:
Panipat, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Moradabad, Rampur,
Bareilly, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich,
Shravasti, Basti, Gorakhpur
This ambitious infrastructure project is expected to significantly boost regional connectivity, promote economic activity, and improve travel efficiency across Uttar Pradesh and northern India.
