The Gorakhpur–Siliguri Expressway project has gained significant momentum, with administrative efforts accelerating after the slowdown caused by election activities. The six-lane greenfield expressway will pass through 56 villages in East Champaran, connecting eight districts of Bihar and opening new avenues for economic growth, trade, and employment in the region.
According to officials, the expressway will enter East Champaran from Paharpur and move across eight blocks before entering the Shivhar district. Land acquisition for 491.12 hectares in East Champaran is already underway, following official approval. Since the project runs entirely along a greenfield route, it will avoid densely populated areas, ensuring smoother acquisition and faster construction.
A Major Boost for North Bihar’s Connectivity
The mega expressway will traverse eight districts in Bihar—West Champaran, East Champaran, Shivhar, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, and Kishanganj. In total, it will cover 39 administrative blocks and 313 villages, significantly enhancing connectivity across the state.
The 520-km corridor, estimated to cost ₹32,000 crore, will reduce travel time between Gorakhpur and Siliguri by cutting down the distance to less than 600 km. Vehicles will be able to move at speeds up to 120 km/h, making it one of the fastest high-speed corridors in the region.
Economic Growth, Industrial Corridors, and New Jobs
Local officials confirm that development along the expressway will transform the region’s economic landscape. The project includes the construction of a bridge over the Gandak River within East Champaran.
The Centre also plans to develop industrial corridors along the expressway, which will attract investments, strengthen regional trade, and create thousands of employment opportunities. The improved road network will give a much-needed boost to logistics, agri-trade, and small industries.
Land Acquisition Underway
District authorities have formed a five-member committee to oversee inspections and meetings regarding land acquisition. According to District Land Acquisition Officer Vikas Kumar, the process is being conducted on priority to prevent further delays.
Once completed, the Gorakhpur–Siliguri Expressway will become a transformational infrastructure lifeline for North Bihar, enhancing mobility, boosting commerce, and paving the way for long-term regional development.
