Supreme Court Intervenes in Unnao Case
The Supreme Court of India has stepped in, putting a stay on the relief that the Delhi High Court had granted to Kuldeep Singh Sengar, an expelled political leader, in the 2017 Unnao rape case of a minor girl. The apex court has stayed the High Court’s order, which had suspended the life sentence passed to him, thus, ensuring that he is kept in judicial custody.
Stay on Suspension of Life Sentence
Delhi High Court had earlier suspended the life imprisonment sentence that had been awarded to Kuldeep Singh Sengar. However, the Supreme Court has now stayed that order, unequivocally stating that the accused will not be released from jail even on bail until further directions are issued.This step reaffirms the commitment of the apex court to inspect the matter with utmost gravity.
Statement from the Victims Side
Hemant Kumar Maurya, advocate representing the victim, welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision. He expressed gratitude on behalf of the survivor and stated that the Court has passed a strong order directing that the accused must remain in jail. The Supreme Court has also given time to the opposing side to file a counter-affidavit. Until this legal process is completed, the stay on the Delhi High Court’s order will continue.
