Lucknow News: Announces Major Boost to Transport: Old Lucknow to Get Metro Soon

The identified land parcel also includes plots from the Machhli Mandi area, enabling a smoother and more integrated layout for the upcoming depot.

The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has announced a major milestone for the city, confirming that metro services will soon run through Old Lucknow, one of the most congested and historically significant parts of the capital. The project marks a crucial advancement in improving mobility and easing daily commute challenges faced by residents.

Lucknow News: Announces Major Boost to Transport

LDA officials revealed that the East–West corridor of Lucknow Metro will establish its main depot at Vasant Kunj Yojana, where approximately 40 acres of land have already been earmarked in Sector-A. The identified land parcel also includes plots from the Machhli Mandi area, enabling a smoother and more integrated layout for the upcoming depot.

Authorities believe that the construction of the depot will accelerate the Metro’s operational timeline and strengthen connectivity between Chowk, Aminabad, Kaiserbagh, and other old city localities, which currently face heavy traffic congestion. Once functional, the metro line is expected to reduce dependence on traditional transport modes and significantly cut travel time for thousands of commuters.

Urban planners have welcomed the move

Urban planners have welcomed the move, noting that metro expansion into Old Lucknow was long due, given the narrow streets and high population density. The project is also expected to trigger economic growth in the surrounding areas by improving access to markets, heritage sites, and business hubs.

LDA is working closely with UP Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) to ensure that the land acquisition and design approvals are completed within the proposed timelines. Senior officials have indicated that environmental clearances, structural planning, and tender processes will begin soon to keep the project on track.

The development reflects the Uttar Pradesh government’s broader push to modernize transport infrastructure and strengthen urban connectivity under its long-term vision for a more efficient and commuter-friendly Lucknow.
