Lucknow News : The Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) has been criticized for the scarcity of critical care medicine (CCM) beds, with most being reserved for VVIPs, and the lack of transparency in the admission process. In a hospital of 1,600 beds, there are only 20 CCM beds, making it challenging for non-VVIP patients to secure admission.
Critical Care Beds Scarce for Non-VVIPs at SGPGIMS
Patients in the waiting list express frustration with the lack of transparency in the admission process. While there have been proposals to increase the number of CCM beds at SGPGIMS, the hospital’s director suggests alleviating the load by increasing CCM beds in other hospitals across the state. Insiders suggest that, ideally, a hospital should allocate around 20% of its capacity to CCM, but SGPGIMS currently provides only around 0.8%.
Lack of Transparency in Admission Process
Director Radha Krishna Dhiman suggests that the excess load of patients on SGPGIMS should be addressed by increasing CCM beds in other hospitals in the state, such as medical colleges and major medical centers, to ensure that only selected patients who truly need treatment in a super-specialty hospital like SGPGIMS are referred.
Doctors within the CCM department maintain that they prioritize young patients, those with treatable conditions, and those who respond well to treatment, without considering VIP status. However, attendants of patients in the waiting list continue to express concerns about the lack of transparency in the admission process.
