Lucknow University saw tensions rise as religious events held at the historic Lal Baradari structure led to protests and counter-protests.

The issue began when Muslim students held namaz and iftar at the structure, which is currently sealed for restoration. This was followed by a protest by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), where they chanted Hanuman Chalisa and called for the purification of the structure with Ganga jal.

The police intervened as tensions arose between the groups of students.

What Happened at Lal Baradari?

The Lal Baradari, which is situated inside the university campus and is also under preservation, has a disputed religious background.

On Sunday, Muslim students offered namaz near the closed structure. By Monday, Hindu student organisations started gathering at the same location and reciting Hanuman Chalisa. This led to verbal clashes, and the police had to arrest some students to avoid further complications. By Tuesday, strong security was present at all locations within the campus to ensure that there was law and order.

Magistrate Issues Notice to 13 Students

A notice was issued to 13 students who were part of the namaz, signed by an executive magistrate, citing disturbance in the peace and conservation efforts.

The students are required to furnish a personal bond of Rs 50,000 under CrPC Sections 126 and 135, along with two sureties of the same amount. This bond will be valid for a period of one year. This comes after a police report was filed by the Hasanganj police station.

Administration Calls for Calm to Prevent Escalation

The university administration and police have called for calm. The university administration stated that the structure is currently under repair and preservation, and any activity there could disturb the conservation efforts.

This incident comes after previous campus tensions, but is currently under political focus in the capital of Uttar Pradesh.
