CM Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, emphasised the connection between the various harvest festivals such as Makar Sankranti, Magh Mela, Pongal and their underlying similarities of beliefs, values and culture. He reiterated the message of “unity in diversity”, stating that these celebrations demonstrate the common spiritual connection between the people of India through longstanding religious traditions that incorporate nature into their daily lives.
The Significance of the Harvest Season
Yogi Adityanath spoke of the significance of Makar Sankranti as a reminder that Makar Sankranti marks the transition of the sun from Capricorn to Aquarius. According to CM Yogi, this marks the beginning of new and positive times. He explained that this journey continues through the ritual bathing performed at the sacred river ghats along the banks of the Holy Ganges, and through devotion to the Divine. Pongal, which is celebrated in Southern India, gives thanks to nature and the farmers for their contribution to food production, and demonstrates the same sentiments through local/regional customs.

Cultural Unity
CM Yogi Adityanath pointed out that while there are differences in names, customs and festivals, all three festivals share a basic tenet — reverence for and respect for the environment, the belief in the power of spiritual regeneration, and the recognition and celebration of community living. He expressed that the festivals serve to preserve India’s Civilisation and its continuity from one generation to another without interruption or interference.
Promoting Social Harmony
The Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, noted that these harvest festivals promote social cohesiveness and create opportunities for communities to participate as one. From the river banks of Prayagraj (Allahabad) to the farmlands of Tamil Nadu, the various harvest festivals connect people of all faiths, values and backgrounds through a sense of togetherness.
