The much-awaited Noida International Airport in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, is now scheduled to commence commercial operations by November 2025, with domestic and cargo services expected to begin as early as September. This updated timeline marks the third revision of the airport’s launch date, previously expected to open on September 29, 2024, then postponed to April 25, and subsequently to June 30, 2025.
Delays Linked to Pandemic and Late Construction Start
According to officials, the shifting deadlines were mainly caused by delays in initiating construction, which was impacted significantly by the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the setbacks, the project is now gaining momentum, with over 80% of the construction completed, including 90% completion of the runway and airside infrastructure.
First Phase Nearing Completion
The first phase of the airport, once completed this year, will have the capacity to serve 12 million passengers annually. It will also include a cargo terminal, a multi-modal logistics hub, and a robust ground transport system aimed at improving accessibility across the National Capital Region (NCR).
Terminal Interior and Licensing Remain Pending
While major external infrastructure like the runway is nearly complete, interior work on the terminal building and roofing are still underway. Additionally, the airport is yet to receive its aerodrome license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), a mandatory step before commencing flight operations.
A Mega Boost to Regional Connectivity
Once operational, Jewar Airport is expected to become Asia’s largest and the world’s fourth-largest airport, significantly reducing the passenger load on Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. The facility will act as a key aviation and economic hub for western Uttar Pradesh, Noida, Greater Noida, and adjoining areas, attracting domestic and international carriers, logistics operators, and businesses.
The state government and concessionaire Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL)—a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International—have assured the public that the project is on track for timely delivery.
