A student of Gautam Buddha University in Greater Noida was issued a notice seeking a personal bond of ₹5 lakh over his alleged participation in a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. The notice was later revoked by the authorities on the same day.

The student, Akshat Tripathi, was served the notice by the Greater Noida Executive Magistrate on September 4 under Section 130 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The proceedings were initiated following a police report alleging that Tripathi had encouraged other university students to participate in the protest and was spreading anti-government narratives.

The notice asked the student to explain why he should not be directed to maintain peace for six months by furnishing a personal bond of ₹5 lakh, along with two sureties of the same amount.
Police claimed that Tripathi’s activities had created tension on the Gautam Buddha University campus and could potentially lead to a breach of public order.
Tripathi, however, denied the allegations and said he had participated in the Jantar Mantar protest peacefully. He also claimed that the university had remained closed for nearly three months at the time and that he was not attending classes.
The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) criticised the action, alleging that the notice amounted to an attempt to intimidate students for exercising their right to peaceful protest.
Police later clarified that the notice had been revoked on September 4 itself after the matter came to their attention, with the concerned authorities informed accordingly.
The development has drawn attention to the handling of student participation in protests and the use of preventive provisions to maintain public order in Uttar Pradesh.
