NTPC Explores Nuclear Power Plant in UP; Feasibility Study Underway in Three Districts

If executed, it could significantly enhance power availability, support industrial growth, and contribute to environmental commitments at both state and national levels.

UP Nuclear Power Plant: In a significant move aimed at strengthening long-term energy security, NTPC Limited is exploring the possibility of setting up a nuclear power plant in Uttar Pradesh. The initiative comes amid rising electricity demand and the need for cleaner, sustainable energy sources.

Senior officials of NTPC confirmed that preliminary discussions and feasibility assessments are currently underway. Key factors such as land availability, water resources, environmental impact, and regulatory approvals are being evaluated before finalizing the project.

According to officials, the districts of Lalitpur, Prayagraj, and Sonbhadra have been identified for initial assessment. These regions are being studied for their geographical suitability and infrastructure potential to support a high-capacity nuclear facility.

If approved, the project could play a key role in making the state more energy-secure while also contributing to India’s clean energy goals by reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

UP Nuclear Power Plant: Diversification into Clean and Future Energy

NTPC officials also highlighted that the company is expanding beyond conventional thermal power. Alongside nuclear energy, the focus is shifting towards renewable and emerging energy sources, including solar, hydro, wind, and green hydrogen.

A hydrogen fuel station project is also being developed in Greater Noida, reflecting NTPC’s broader strategy to align with future energy technologies and reduce carbon emissions.

Ongoing Power Projects to Boost Supply

In addition to the proposed nuclear initiative, NTPC is working on expanding its existing power capacity in the state. The Singrauli Stage-III project, with a capacity of 1,600 MW, is targeted for completion by 2028. Notably, the entire power generated from this project is expected to be procured by the Uttar Pradesh government, which could provide substantial relief to domestic and industrial consumers.

Further, NTPC Green Energy Limited is developing solar power projects, including a 600 MW plant in Lalitpur and a 400 MW project in Chitrakoot, aimed at enhancing renewable energy capacity in the state.

Boost to Energy Security and Sustainability

The proposed nuclear power project, along with ongoing renewable initiatives, signals a strategic shift towards a diversified and sustainable energy mix in Uttar Pradesh. If executed, it could significantly enhance power availability, support industrial growth, and contribute to environmental commitments at both state and national levels.
