A scandalized incident in which a Vice President of the Karni Sena, publicly, uninvitedly, made a "Nikah" proposal to recently elected Member of Parliament, Iqra Hasan, has sparked a storm of indignation and scandal in social and political circles. The incident, recorded and soon going viral on social media, is of the Karni Sena head making the very misplaced remarks, indeed happy that All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi would then refer to him as "Jija" (brother-in-law).
"मैं इक़रा से निकाह कुबूल फरमाता हूँ, ओवैसी मुझे जीजा कहेंगे"

◆ करणी सेना के राष्ट्रीय उपाध्यक्ष योगेंद्र राणा ने शेयर किया वीडियो

The offending video, now widely viral, is of the Karni Sena representative speaking to a group of media persons or congregation, naming MP Iqra Hasan specifically and making the unsolicited offer. His remark about Owaisi, a senior Muslim leader and MP, has added a virulently offensive and communal flavor to the episode and fueled public outrage. Those denouncing are arguing that such public comments are not just horrifyingly disrespectful of a woman and an elected official but also reflective of an alarming trend towards raw and, many times, misogynistic speech.
The video has drawn scathing criticism from every corner, from political leaders to women's rights activists and social commentators. Everyone is appalled at the Karni Sena official's audacity and the callous disregard for public discipline and decency towards a member of the elected house. Political opinion transcends political parties in denouncing the act and demanding immediate and firm action against the perpetrator, calling for the necessity of curbing such public displays of bad behavior and intimidation.
Social media is abuzz with arguments, with individuals citing the necessity of holding someone accountable for words uttered, especially someone who holds a position with an organization. The incident is slowly being perceived far and wide as a blow to the dignity of a female MP and an attempt to communalize a public servant. Calls for legal action, including potential charges of harassment or instigation of hatred, are increasing as the video goes viral.
This episode is a bitter reminder of the predicament of women in public life and the continued need to counteract misogyny and public discourse. It reminds us of the need to maintain standards of public decency and respect towards all, particularly from those who claim to speak for institutions or groups. The offhand proposal of the "Nikah" and the uncouth name-dropping of a prominent Muslim leader are signs of an alarming trend of public figures crossing boundaries of respectful conversation.
Even as the authorities are invited to examine the issue in detail, the concern is to ensure that the kind of public disrespect displayed is met with the right measure. Collective indignation is a reflection of a collective public sense of entitlement to accountability and reads as a message that this sort of conduct would not be countenanced in a democratic and civilized nation. The outrage over the Karni Sena VP's conduct keeps bearing down on the headlines, seeking to drive home the need to be more vigilant against hate speech and personal abuse in public.
