Sambhal Mosque Row: In a key move, the Supreme Court has paused the proceedings of the Sambhal Mosque Row. On Friday, the Court ordered the trial court in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, to stop the survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid. This decision comes amid rising tensions in the region. The survey was ordered by a district court, which sparked violence and protests. The matter will now be looked at by the Allahabad High Court.

The Background of the Sambhal Mosque Row

The Sambhal Mosque Row began on November 19, when a district court directed a survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid. The mosque is believed to have been built during the Mughal era. Some people have claimed that the mosque was built over a Hindu temple, the Harihar temple. This claim led to the court order for a survey, which caused a lot of unrest in the area.

Following the court’s order, protesters gathered near the mosque on November 24. Clashes broke out between the protesters and the police. This resulted in stone-pelting, arson, and sadly, the deaths of four people. Many others were injured in the violence. The situation in Sambhal quickly grew tense, making the role of the courts even more critical.

Supreme Court's Decision to Pause the Survey

The Supreme Court intervened to prevent further violence. It told the Sambhal trial court to stop the survey proceedings until the Allahabad High Court has reviewed the case. The Court also said no reports about the survey should be considered until the High Court issues its decision. This was a big step in controlling the situation in Sambhal.

Ensuring Peace and Harmony in Sambhal

Beyond the legal proceedings, the Supreme Court's ruling also stresses the importance of peace and order in Sambhal. Given the violence that erupted recently, the Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to take measures to ensure calm in the town. In addition to deploying security forces, the state has been instructed to form a peace committee with members from both communities to facilitate dialogue and prevent further tensions.
