In the annals of Ayodhya's history, Kadamkalathil Karunakaran Nair, fondly remembered as "Nair saab," emerges as a pivotal figure. Born in Kerala, Nair courageously resisted then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's order to remove the Ram Lalla idol, leading to his suspension, a legal battle, and eventual victory. This article unfolds the remarkable journey of Nair, from a defiant civil servant to a key player in the Ram Janmabhoomi Hindu revival movement.

Defying Nehru's Diktat: The Ram Lalla Controversy

As the district magistrate of Faizabad in 1949, Nair's refusal to comply with Nehru's directive to remove the Ram Lalla idol marked the beginning of his courageous stand. The controversial decision resulted in Nair's suspension, initiating a legal battle that he ultimately won. His unwavering commitment to the cause ignited the Hindu revival movement in Ayodhya.

A Man of Principle: Legal Battle and Political Journey

Despite winning the legal battle and reinstatement in the civil service, Nair chose to resign, having earned a law degree during the course of his struggles. Subsequently, he entered politics, contesting as a Jana Sangh candidate from Bahraich Lok Sabha constituency in 1967, becoming a member of the fourth Lok Sabha. His wife Shakuntala had earlier won as a Jan Sangh candidate from Kaiserganj Lok Sabha in 1952.

Legacy and Recognition: Nair's Impact on Ayodhya

Nair's nephew, K K Padmanabha Pillai, shares fond memories of the family's illustrious son, affectionately known as Nair saab in Ayodhya. Despite differences in opinion about Nair's support for the Ram temple cause, he remains a revered figure in Ayodhya. Archaeologist K K Muhammed acknowledges Nair's pivotal role, recounting the public's adoration for him during a visit in 1977.

Ayodhya's Tribute: Memorial for K K Nair

As Ayodhya prepares for the Ram Temple consecration, Sunil Pillai, Nair's son, has traveled to attend the ceremony.
